Buyers Guide
Buying or renting in Panama has gotten much easier now that we have implemented the multiple listing service. In the past, if you wanted to buy or rent, it was a chore. If you went to one real estate agent, he or she would show you only the properties that he or she knew about. There could be a property a mile away or even in the same building for thousands less, and neither of you would know about it because there was no cooperation among agents. You would have to go with several agents just to get a good idea of what is available in a certain area. Then, you would have to start all over again if you wanted to look in a different area. A lot of times the property you liked was represented by a real estate agent that you did not like, and you were forced to work with someone you do not feel comfortable with. Now, if you find a real estate agent that you feel can represent you best, you will not have to get bounced around from one to another. He or she can show you anything in the country.
Panama has had a problem in the past with individuals selling real estate without a license. Only licensed real estate agents are permitted to display properties on our site. These agents can be fined or lose their license if they conduct themselves inappropriately and gives recourse for unjust practices. They have knowledge of the laws and procedures. Many of them belong to real estate associations such as ACOBIR and PAN AMCHAM, that have a code of ethics or risk of expulsion. For these reasons, you can be more confident in the information provided by a professional rather than taking your chances otherwise. You can use the “Find an Agent” tab on the home page to locate an agent based on the language spoken and the area you want to buy.
